Description
Bottled exclusively in magnum, the 2004 Sara Pérez y René Barbier Gratallops Partida Bellvisos is a rare and deeply characterful red from the heart of Priorat. This steep “coster” vineyard was painstakingly resurrected from abandonment, only for Sara and René to discover that a significant portion was planted not with the expected Carinyena, but with the local Garnatxa Peluda – a serendipitous twist that adds lift and freshness to the blend. Long élevage, low yields and old vines come together here in a wine that captures Priorat’s wild beauty and its remarkable capacity to age with grace.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2004 Partida Bellvisos Magnum shows a deep, dark ruby core with subtle garnet reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its slow evolution in large-format bottle. The nose is complex and layered: crushed slate, warm, smoky earth and graphite mingle with notes of black cherry, ripe plum and mulberry, framed by hints of espresso, cocoa, dried lavender and a touch of sweet spice from French oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated, yet remarkably poised. The old-vine Garnacha and Carinyena deliver dense black fruit, black cherry and damson, wrapped around a firm spine of acidity and fine, mineral-driven tannins. There is a distinct sense of the llicorella (Priorat’s slate soils) in the wine’s salty, ferrous edge and long, focused finish. The magnum format and the naturally high acidity mean this 2004 remains vibrant and very much alive, with several more years of positive evolution ahead; drink now for its beautiful maturity, or continue to cellar if you enjoy more tertiary, savoury complexity.
Production
Partida Bellvisos comes from a dramatic, steeply sloped “coster” vineyard in Gratallops, rooted in classic Priorat llicorella slate. The vines – a field blend dominated by old-vine Garnacha (including a notable proportion of native Garnatxa Peluda) and Carinyena with an average age of around 65 years – produce naturally low yields of highly concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand on these vertiginous terraces, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. A long maceration extracts deep colour, structure and aromatic complexity, followed by maturation for about 12 months in French oak barrels. Extended bottle aging, especially in magnum, allows the wine to knit together slowly, revealing refinement and nuance alongside its inherent power.
Food & Serving
This is a powerful, mineral-driven Priorat that shines with richly flavoured dishes: slow-braised lamb shoulder, oxtail stew, venison, Iberico pork, or aged hard cheeses such as Manchego Curado and Comté. It also works beautifully with chargrilled beef, wild mushroom ragù, and dishes featuring rosemary, thyme or smoked paprika. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in magnum, the wine benefits from a generous decant of at least 1–2 hours to open up the aromatic profile and soften the structure. Use large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses to fully express its complexity.
Producer
Sara Pérez and René Barbier are among the most respected names in modern Priorat, part of the second generation that has elevated the region from near obscurity to international acclaim. René is the son of René Barbier Sr., founder of Clos Mogador and a pioneer of the Priorat renaissance in the late 20th century, while Sara is renowned for her work at Mas Martinet and Venus La Universal. Together they craft micro-terroir wines like Partida Bellvisos that highlight specific old-vine sites, extreme slate slopes and meticulous, low-intervention winemaking. Their philosophy emphasises long aging over early gratification, and their wines regularly earn critical praise for their depth, personality and ability to translate Priorat’s rugged landscape into the glass.
