Description
The 2004 Antinori Solaia is a benchmark Super Tuscan, crafted from a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grown in the heart of Chianti Classico. Regarded as the first of the truly “modern” Solaia vintages, 2004 showcases an extraordinary balance of power, silkiness and refinement. Released a second time by the estate to highlight its aging potential, this vintage has become a reference point for collectors and serious Tuscan wine lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2004 Solaia displays a deep, concentrated ruby core with just a hint of garnet at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is complex and layered: blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and black cherry intertwine with notes of violets, cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, sweet spice and a subtle touch of dark chocolate and leather that speaks to its bottle age.
On the palate, this is a polished, velvety wine with superb textural finesse. Ripe black fruits—cassis, plum and black cherry—are framed by beautifully integrated oak, giving nuances of vanilla, mocha and sweet baking spices. The tannins are sweet, ultra-fine and silky, providing structure without any harshness, while vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and lifted. Hints of mineral, pencil shavings and savory herbs linger on the long, persistent finish. With a drinking window broadly cited from 2014 to 2034, well-stored bottles of the 2004 Solaia are currently in a prime drinking phase, with further positive development still possible over the coming years.
Production
Solaia’s fruit comes from a single, 10-hectare vineyard on southwest-facing slopes at 350–400 meters above sea level in the Santa Cristina in Val di Pesa area, within the Chianti Classico zone. The soils are stony with marl, providing excellent drainage and naturally limiting yields, which enhances concentration and complexity in the grapes. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters are selected. In 2004, for the first time in Solaia’s history, the component varieties were vinified and aged separately, allowing the winemaking team to fine-tune each lot before blending at the end of the maturation period. Fermentation and maceration were carefully temperature-controlled to preserve aromatics and manage tannin extraction, followed by aging in small French oak barrels (barriques), where the separate components evolved before being assembled into the final cuvée that defines the modern, ultra-refined Solaia style.
Food & Serving
The 2004 Solaia pairs beautifully with richly flavored, refined dishes such as dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised short ribs, lamb shank, venison or well-marbled roast beef. It also complements truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto, and mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 18°C (around 64–65°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the bouquet to fully express itself. Given its age and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open up the aromatics and let the tannins soften, while also giving you a chance to separate any fine sediment that may have formed.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with a winemaking legacy dating back to 1385. Based in Tuscany, Antinori has been at the forefront of the region’s quality revolution and played a pivotal role in the birth of the Super Tuscan movement, challenging traditional rules to create world-class wines. Solaia, born from prime vineyards adjacent to the famed Tignanello cru, stands as one of the estate’s flagship wines and a global icon of Italian red wine. The 2004 vintage, often cited as one of the great modern Solaia releases and rewarded with top critical scores, further cemented Antinori’s reputation for combining innovation with deep respect for Tuscan terroir.
