Description
The 1998 Champagne Louis Roederer Rosé Late Release “Vignoble de la Rivière” is a rare, late-disgorged cuvée that showcases the grace of mature rosé Champagne at its peak. Drawn from Louis Roederer’s esteemed vineyards along the Marne River, this bottling combines extended lees aging with a great vintage to deliver remarkable depth, nuance, and refinement. Released only after decades of slow evolution in the cellars, it offers an opportunity to experience 1990s Champagne in beautifully preserved form.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this rosé shows a luminous, deep salmon hue with copper and onion-skin reflections, the color softened and enriched by time in bottle. The mousse is fine and persistent, forming a delicate, creamy bead. On the nose, layers of wild strawberries, preserved raspberry, and blood orange peel unfold, followed by notes of dried rose petals, toasted brioche, almond praline, and a subtle hint of spice and forest floor that speak to its age and extended lees aging.
The palate is structured yet silky, with a refined, vinous texture that sets it apart from younger rosés. Red berry compote, candied citrus, and Mirabelle plum are interwoven with flavors of hazelnut, pastry cream, and subtle cocoa, all carried by Champagne’s signature chalky, saline minerality. The acidity remains vibrant and precise, giving lift and length to a long, savory, and gently smoky finish. Fully mature but still energetic, this late release has reached an exquisite drinking window and, if well stored, can continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining even more tertiary complexity.
Production
The “Vignoble de la Rivière” cuvée is sourced from Louis Roederer’s own estate vineyards situated along the banks of the Marne River in Champagne, where cool river breezes and chalk-rich soils create an ideal environment for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve both precision and aromatic intensity. In classic Roederer fashion, the base wines are vinified separately in stainless steel and, for selected lots, in oak, before blending. A discreet proportion of red wine from old-vine Pinot Noir parcels is added to create the rosé style, giving both color and structure. After bottling for the prise de mousse, the wine spends an extended period on its lees in the historic Roederer cellars, far longer than standard vintage releases, before late disgorgement and a finely judged dosage that respects the maturity and natural concentration of the 1998 vintage.
Food & Serving
This mature rosé Champagne excels at the table, pairing beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast with cherries, roasted pigeon, veal sweetbreads, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as rich seafood like lobster, langoustine, or tuna tartare. It also complements aged hard cheeses and poultry in cream or truffle sauces. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the complex aromatics to fully express themselves; avoid serving too cold, which can mute its subtle tertiary notes. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving and pouring gently into wide-bowled Champagne glasses or white wine stems will help the wine open up and show its full spectrum of aromas.
Producer
Founded in 1776 in Reims, Louis Roederer is one of Champagne’s few remaining great family-owned houses and the creator of the iconic Cristal. Unlike many négociant houses, Roederer controls the majority of its grape supply through extensive, meticulously farmed estate vineyards, giving it remarkable consistency and a strong expression of terroir. Over the centuries, the house has become renowned for its precision, elegance, and ability to craft Champagnes that age for decades, earning a place among the most respected names in the region. Its careful stewardship of prime sites—such as those along the Marne River that give rise to the “Vignoble de la Rivière” bottling—has led to numerous accolades and a reputation for producing some of Champagne’s most refined and long-lived wines.
