Description

The 1994 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a rare opportunity to experience one of Burgundy’s most fabled white wines at full maturity. Drawn exclusively from the estate’s historic holdings on the Corton hill, this Chardonnay captures the layered, mineral-driven character that has made Corton-Charlemagne a benchmark for great white Burgundy. In a vintage that has quietly impressed seasoned collectors, this bottle offers a beautifully evolved expression of terroir, craft, and time in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1994 Corton-Charlemagne shows a deep golden hue, a clear sign of its age and careful cellaring, with bright reflections that speak to its ongoing vitality. The nose is complex and gently tertiary, moving well beyond primary fruit into notes of toasted hazelnut, almond cream, dried yellow orchard fruit, preserved lemon, beeswax and warm brioche, all threaded with a distinctive chalky, stony minerality and subtle hints of white truffle and lanolin. On the palate, this is a mature Grand Cru of real depth and finesse, more about texture, harmony and nuance than power. Expect a rich, silky mid-palate with flavors of baked apple, quince, candied citrus peel, honeycomb and roasted nuts, supported by a still-present spine of acidity that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. The finish is long, savory and saline, with echoes of smoke, flint and gentle spice from well-integrated oak. At this stage, the wine is fully into its drinking window and should be enjoyed over the next few years, with the understanding that, as with any wine of this age, individual bottle condition and storage history will strongly influence its remaining potential.

Production
Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne parcels stretch from the top to the bottom of the Corton hill, encompassing a patchwork of clay, silt, marl and varied limestone that together create a uniquely complex terroir. The west-facing exposure bathes the vines in sunlight from late morning to sunset, ensuring slow, even ripening and preserving acidity in the Chardonnay grapes. Harvest is traditionally carried out by hand to ensure rigorous selection in the vineyard. On arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo a light crushing before pressing to encourage a gentle extraction of flavor and structure. After settling, the must is fermented in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, with each barrel closely monitored until the first racking, when the blending process begins. The wine then continues to mature on its fine lees through a second winter, gaining texture and complexity, before a final racking and a short period in tank (around two months) to harmonize the cuvée prior to bottling.

Food & Serving
This fully mature Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru shines with refined, richly flavored dishes that can match its depth without overwhelming its delicacy. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a champagne or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre noisette, creamy poultry dishes such as poulet de Bresse with morels, or veal in a light cream and mushroom sauce. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or mature Gruyère. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 12–14°C (54–57°F); if the wine is too cold, its complexity will be muted. Given its age, decant gently for about 30 minutes to an hour to let the aromatics unfurl, taking care to leave any sediment in the bottle. For particularly fragile bottles, opening and serving carefully from the bottle without a full decant may be preferable.

Producer
Bonneau du Martray is one of Burgundy’s most storied domaines, renowned for its unwavering focus on the Corton hill and, in particular, its exceptional holdings in Corton-Charlemagne. Unusually for Burgundy, the estate historically produced just two Grand Cru wines: a white Corton-Charlemagne and a red Corton, both drawn from contiguous parcels that form a coherent expression of the slope from top to bottom. Over generations, Bonneau du Martray has become a reference point for the appellation, known for combining traditional, meticulous viticulture with patient, oak-based élevage to craft wines that age gracefully for decades. Their Corton-Charlemagne is widely regarded as one of the purest and most authentic interpretations of Charlemagne’s terroir, and the domaine’s long-standing reputation places it among the key names that have defined the prestige of the Côte de Beaune’s great white wines.
