Description
The 1984 Leroy Morey-Saint-Denis is a rare opportunity to experience mature red Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered names. Released late from Domaine Leroy’s own cellars in 2022, this bottle combines decades of bottle age with the impeccable provenance collectors dream of. Sourced from the noble terroirs of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, it captures the old-school elegance and nuance that define classic Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 1984 Morey-Saint-Denis shows a mature brick-garnet core with a delicate, tawny rim—clear signs of graceful evolution rather than fatigue. The nose opens slowly and intriguingly, revealing layers of dried red cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal, followed by undergrowth, dried herbs, truffle, and a hint of leather and cedar—those unmistakable tertiary notes of well-aged Pinot Noir.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with a silky, almost weightless texture and very fine, resolved tannins. The fruit is delicate but persistent—dried red berries and sour cherry—interwoven with mushroom, forest floor, tea leaf, and subtle spice. Acidity is still present and lively enough to give the wine shape and freshness, while the finish is savory, nuanced, and gently persistent rather than powerful. At this stage, the wine is at or close to peak maturity; it should be enjoyed in the near term, within a few years of purchase, to appreciate its full aromatic complexity.
Production
Hailing from Morey-Saint-Denis in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this wine reflects a terroir of limestone-rich clay soils and well-draining slopes that are ideal for Pinot Noir. While the 1984 vintage predates Lalou Bize-Leroy’s full biodynamic conversion, the domaine’s obsessive focus on low yields and meticulous vineyard care was already in place, with careful hand-harvesting to ensure only the healthiest bunches made it to the cellar. Vinification for Leroy reds traditionally favors a gentle, detail-focused approach: carefully sorted grapes, traditional fermentation with a respectful use of whole clusters depending on the year, and élevage in fine French oak barrels. This particular bottle’s extended rest in Domaine Leroy’s own cellars before its late release in 2022 has ensured benchmark storage conditions and exceptional provenance.
Food & Serving
Mature red Burgundy of this finesse deserves thoughtful pairings that won’t overwhelm its subtlety. Consider classic dishes such as roast chicken with thyme, veal or pork tenderloin, duck with a light jus, or delicate game birds; earthy accompaniments like mushroom fricassée, truffle-inflected dishes, or simply roasted root vegetables also work beautifully. Soft to semi-soft cheeses such as Époisses, Langres, or a well-aged Comté are excellent partners. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F). Decant gently for about 30–45 minutes to let the wine unfurl, watching carefully so as not to overexpose it to air given its age; alternatively, you can let it open slowly in the glass for a more gradual evolution.
Producer
Domaine Leroy stands among the absolute elite of Burgundy, mentioned in the same breath as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau. The Leroy story begins in the late 19th century with François Leroy and the establishment of Maison Leroy, a négociant house of growing renown. In 1988, Lalou Bize-Leroy formally created Domaine Leroy and, drawing on her deep experience and uncompromising standards, transformed it into a benchmark estate. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, Lalou’s almost obsessive dedication to vineyard health, microscopic yields, and precision in the cellar has made Leroy wines some of the most sought-after and expensive in the world. From legendary grands crus like Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Chambertin and top Nuits-Saint-Georges holdings, the domaine’s bottlings are celebrated for their complexity, finesse, and impressive longevity—making this late-released 1984 Morey-Saint-Denis a particularly special piece of Burgundy history.
