Description

The 1983 Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges is a rare glimpse into mature Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered names. Released late from Domaine Leroy’s own cellars in 2022, this bottle offers a decades-long evolution under ideal conditions, combining provenance, pedigree, and profound complexity. For collectors and Burgundy purists, it represents a chance to experience old-vine Pinot Noir at full maturity, crafted under the exacting standards that have made Leroy legendary.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 1983 Nuits-Saint-Georges shows a fully evolved, translucent garnet core with brick and tawny hues at the rim—classic signs of a well-aged Burgundy Pinot Noir. The nose is hauntingly complex, with notes of dried red cherries, wild strawberries, sous-bois, dried rose petals, and autumn leaves layered over hints of leather, truffle, tobacco, and a delicate, savory minerality. Subtle spice, dried orange peel, and a faint herbal lift speak to both age and terroir. On the palate, the wine is silken and ethereal rather than powerful, with fine-grained, resolved tannins and a beautifully integrated acidity that keeps the wine alive and vibrant despite its age. Flavors of mature red fruit, dried plum, forest floor, and mushroom mingle with hints of cedar, tea leaf, and gentle earth-driven umami. The finish is long, fragrant, and graceful, tapering slowly rather than crashing, as great old Burgundy should. Properly stored late releases from Leroy are known for remarkable longevity; this bottle is in its tertiary drinking window and should continue to offer pleasure for several more years for those who appreciate the nuance of fully evolved Pinot Noir.

Production
Nuits-Saint-Georges sits at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, on slopes of limestone and marl with varying clay content that give the wines their characteristic structure and earthy depth. While this vintage predates the formal creation of Domaine Leroy in 1988, it reflects the Maison’s meticulous sourcing and exacting standards, with fruit drawn from prime village parcels of Pinot Noir. Harvests in this era were typically done by hand, with rigorous selection to ensure only the healthiest bunches reached the cuverie. Vinification would have focused on traditional Burgundian methods—destemmed or partially whole-cluster fermentation in open vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—producing a wine structured for long-term aging. Crucially, this bottling has benefited from extended resting in Leroy’s own cellars, under perfect conditions, before its late release in 2022, ensuring exceptional provenance and preservation of complexity.

Food & Serving
This mature Nuits-Saint-Georges is best paired with refined, earthy dishes that echo its tertiary aromas: think roast pigeon or duck, veal with morels, braised rabbit, game birds, mushroom risotto, or aged, hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Avoid overly spicy or heavily sauced dishes, which can overwhelm its delicacy. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without muting the bouquet. Decant gently for 30–45 minutes, primarily to let the wine open and to separate it from any sediment; use a narrow decanter or simply let it breathe in the glass, as older Burgundies can be fragile and do not benefit from extended or aggressive aeration.

Producer
Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most illustrious and influential names, with roots dating back to the late 19th century when François Leroy founded Maison Leroy as a négociant house. Under the visionary leadership of Lalou Bize-Leroy—an iconic figure in Burgundy and former co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti—the Leroy name became synonymous with uncompromising quality and meticulous attention to every detail, from vineyard to bottle. Domaine Leroy, established in 1988, is famed for its pioneering embrace of biodynamic viticulture, extremely low yields, and almost obsessive selection, resulting in some of the most coveted and expensive wines in the world. Often mentioned in the same breath as DRC and Armand Rousseau, Leroy’s bottlings from crus such as Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Chambertin, and Nuits-Saint-Georges are reference points for complexity, finesse, and longevity, making them essential benchmarks for serious Burgundy collectors.
