Description
The 1983 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve from Viña Errázuriz is a true icon of Chilean fine wine, representing one of the earliest flagship blends to help define the country’s modern premium wine era. Crafted in the Aconcagua Valley, it combines Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Bordeaux varieties to deliver depth, structure, and remarkable historical significance.
Tasting Notes
Now beautifully matured, the wine shows an elegant brick-garnet hue with a refined, age-worn clarity. The bouquet is layered and complex, with dried blackcurrant, mocha, cigar box, graphite, balsamic herbs, and subtle spice, all unfolding with impressive grace.
On the palate, it is silky and evolved, with fine, integrated tannins, ripe acidity, and a lingering finish marked by savory minerality and warm spice. This is a wine that has already reached a highly expressive stage, though well-stored bottles may continue to hold for a while longer in bottle.
Production
Sourced from the Aconcagua Valley near Panquehue, the wine reflects warm Chilean sunshine balanced by the cooling influences that help preserve freshness and structure. The blend is built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Carmenère adding nuance, and it was made using traditional vinification with extended maceration followed by aging in French oak.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for lamb rack, game dishes, slow-roasted beef, or mature hard cheeses, where its savory complexity can shine. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed, especially if the bottle has sediment; however, older vintage bottles should be handled carefully and tasted before extended aeration.
Producer
Viña Errázuriz was founded in 1870 and is one of Chile’s most important historic estates, playing a major role in establishing the country’s reputation for world-class wine. Based in the Aconcagua Valley, the winery has become known for ambitious Bordeaux-style blends and has earned a strong place among Chile’s leading producers for quality and consistency.
