Description
The 1978 Cossart Gordon Bual Madeira is a rare, single-vintage fortified wine from Madeira’s oldest producer, patiently matured for over four decades before bottling in 2021. Crafted from Bual grapes grown in the island’s warmest subregion, this is a deeply concentrated, semi-sweet Madeira with remarkable freshness and complexity. With only 1,047 individually numbered bottles released, it is as much a collector’s piece as it is a deeply evocative drinking experience, linking today’s glass to centuries of Madeira tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a clear mahogany core with a burnished rim and glints of golden-green at the edge, a classic sign of long, oxidative cask aging. The nose is immediately expressive and layered, with an exuberant bouquet of warm spices, tobacco leaf, and cedar-like exotic woods, wrapped in notes of roasted nuts and hints of dried citrus peel.
On the palate, the 1978 Cossart Gordon Bual is powerful yet poised, offering a medium-sweet profile that is beautifully balanced by piercing acidity. Flavors of caramelized nuts, toffee, orange zest, dried fig, and baking spices unfold in slow succession, supported by a refined, almost vanillic spiciness from long oak maturation. The finish is intensely long, fresh and energetic, with a lingering note of spice and savory nuttiness that keeps drawing you back. Already fully mature after more than 40 years in cask, it is essentially ageless in bottle and will hold its character for many decades if well stored.
Production
The Bual grapes for this 1978 vintage were sourced specifically from Calheta, the warmest and sunniest area of Madeira, where the intense maritime light and heat produce naturally rich, flavorful fruit. All grapes were harvested by hand in the 1978 vintage, ensuring that only perfectly mature bunches were selected. After picking, the grapes were traditionally foot-trodden in wooden lagares, a gentle method that maximizes extraction while preserving finesse. The fortified wine was then aged in old oak casks under the classic "Canteiro" system—barrels resting on wooden beams in lodges in Funchal and later Caniçal—where slow, oxidative aging over more than 40 years concentrated flavors, developed complexity, and integrated the spirit. This patient, gravity- and time-driven process is one of Madeira’s hallmarks and is rarely pursued for such an extended period today.
Food & Serving
This vintage Bual Madeira is superb as a contemplative after-dinner wine, pairing beautifully with nut-based desserts (walnut tart, pecan pie, almond cake), crème brûlée, and dishes featuring caramel, toffee, or orange. It also shines alongside blue cheeses, aged hard cheeses, and even cured meats, where its acidity cuts through richness. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness while allowing the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting is not essential but can be beneficial: pour gently into a small decanter 30–60 minutes before serving to help the bouquet open and to separate any natural sediment from this long-aged wine.
Producer
Founded in 1745, Cossart Gordon & Co. is Madeira’s oldest wine company and one of the historic pillars of the island’s wine trade. Established by Scottish merchant Francis Newton, and later joined by Thomas Newton, Thomas Gordon of Balmaghie, and Thomas Murdoch, the firm—known for much of its history as Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Co.—built a formidable reputation in the 18th and 19th centuries. By 1850, it was reputed to ship “half the growth of the island,” with particularly strong ties to North America, where the finest casks were once known as “America Madeira” and where Madeira famously toasted the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Today, Cossart Gordon remains a benchmark producer, recognized for its classic, long-aged Madeiras that honor traditional methods while representing some of the most collectible fortified wines from the archipelago.
