Description

This late‑release 1975 Leroy Beaune Sizies is a rare chance to experience mature red Burgundy directly from one of the region’s most revered cellars. Sourced from the Beaune “Sizies” climat, it showcases the finesse, energy and haunting perfume that have made Leroy’s wines some of the most coveted in the world. Held back for decades in the domaine’s own caves and released only in 2022, it combines provenance, pedigree and perfectly evolved complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a garnet core with brick and tawny reflections at the rim, the colour of a fully mature yet well‑kept Burgundy. The nose is nuanced and intensely tertiary, with notes of dried red cherries, wild strawberries and rose petals layered over forest floor, truffle, dried orange peel, cigar box, leather and a subtle, lifted balsamic tone. On the palate, this Beaune Sizies is all about finesse rather than power, with a silky, resolved tannin profile and a graceful, medium‑bodied frame. Flavours of stewed red berries, cranberry compote and blood orange mingle with sous‑bois, dried mushroom, black tea, spice and a gently savoury umami character. The acidity remains fresh and integrated, providing lift and definition through a long, complex, delicately spiced finish. Given its age and the pristine, late‑release cellar conditions, it is at or near peak maturity; enjoy now to savour its full tertiary bouquet, with a remaining drinking window of a few years for those who appreciate fully evolved Burgundy.

Production
Beaune Sizies is a well‑situated Beaune Premier Cru climat, with limestone‑rich clay soils that favour Pinot Noir of perfume and fine structure. Domaine Leroy farms its vineyards biodynamically, using meticulous, low‑yield viticulture, intensive manual work in the vines and strict selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters retained, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in small vats to preserve terroir detail. Élevage takes place in high‑quality French oak barrels (often a notable proportion new for Leroy), with minimal intervention, no compromise on quality, and bottling without unnecessary filtration to maintain texture, depth and authenticity. This particular bottle benefited from extended aging in the domaine’s own cellars before its late release to the market.

Food & Serving
Mature red Burgundy of this delicacy pairs beautifully with refined, savoury dishes rather than heavy or overly spicy cuisine. Think roast veal or guinea fowl with morel or truffle sauce, braised rabbit, pigeon, duck breast with cherries, or simply roast chicken with jus and wild mushrooms; earthy vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, beetroot with aged goat cheese, or lentils with root vegetables also work wonderfully. Serve at around 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatics without muting complexity. Given the wine’s age, decant very gently or, better yet, double‑decant shortly before serving to remove sediment while preserving the fragile bouquet—30 minutes in a wide, not overly aggressive decanter is usually sufficient.

Producer
Domaine Leroy is one of Burgundy’s most legendary and sought‑after producers, often mentioned in the same breath as icons like Domaine de la Romanée‑Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau. The Leroy story begins with Maison Leroy, founded in the late 19th century by François Leroy as a quality‑focused négociant house; the modern domaine itself was established in 1988 by his descendant, Lalou Bize‑Leroy. Lalou, a towering figure in Burgundy, is renowned for her uncompromising commitment to quality and her pioneering adoption of biodynamic viticulture long before it became fashionable. With extremely low yields, obsessive attention to every vine and minimal‑intervention winemaking, Domaine Leroy produces some of the rarest, most complex and age‑worthy wines in the region, from village wines to grand crus like Romanée‑Saint‑Vivant and Chambertin. Tiny production, impeccable terroir expression and consistently top‑tier quality have made Leroy wines benchmarks for collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts worldwide.
