Made from Tinto de Toro, the local expression of Tempranillo, it reflects both the power of its region and the elegance of a carefully crafted, sustainably made wine. Part of Matsu’s celebrated trilogy, El Recio honors the middle generation with a wine that balances structure, concentration, and finesse.

Tasting Notes
Deep and expressive in the glass, El Recio typically shows a dark ruby to garnet color with impressive depth. The nose is layered and inviting, with ripe dark berries, plum, subtle spice, earthy notes, and a gentle touch of oak from its time in French barrels.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with concentrated fruit, firm but well-integrated tannins, and a savoury, mineral edge that speaks of Toro’s old vines and dry climate. The texture is rich yet balanced, making it immediately enjoyable while also giving it the structure to develop further with a few years of cellaring.

Production
Matsu El Recio comes from Toro, in northwest Spain along the Duero River, a region known for intense reds and historic vineyards. The grapes are Tinto de Toro from vines more than 90 to 100 years old, cultivated organically and biodynamically in a fully natural environment. Harvesting is done entirely by hand in the first half of October, when the fruit has reached full ripeness. After gentle pneumatic pressing, fermentation takes place naturally in small concrete tanks, followed by 14 months of ageing in French oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve its authenticity and character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for lamb, braised dishes, grilled meats, and firm aged cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C to bring out both the fruit and the savoury complexity. Decanting for about 30-60 minutes is recommended, especially if enjoyed in its youth, to let the wine open up fully.

Producer
Matsu is Vintae’s sustainable organic wine project in Toro, created by winemaker Raúl Acha with a focus on old vineyards and environmentally respectful farming. The name Matsu means “patient balance” in Japanese, a fitting tribute to the careful, unhurried approach behind the wines. The project is inspired by Japanese principles of simplicity and purity, while also celebrating the heritage of Spanish wine culture. The trilogy concept behind the range represents three generations of winemakers, and Matsu has become a notable reference point for modern, terroir-driven Toro wines.
