Hofstätter Barthenau Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano 2021 is a distinguished Alto Adige Pinot Noir with a distinctly Burgundian sense of elegance and structure. Sourced from the celebrated S. Urbano vineyard in Termeno, it combines concentrated fruit, refined tannins and lively mountain freshness. The wine reflects Hofstätter’s pioneering Vigna philosophy, which highlights the character of individual vineyard sites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a clear, intense garnet-red colour. Its refined bouquet reveals smoky nuances alongside blackcurrant and wild strawberry, complemented by subtle hints of tar and spice. On the palate, it is powerful, dense and remarkably persistent, with a focused acidity-tannin interplay that provides both freshness and structure. Supple tannins lend polish, while the long, lingering finish reveals the wine’s depth and balance. With its firm structure and well-defined acidity, it has excellent potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The grapes come from Guyot-trained vines rooted in the moraine and porphyry soils of Termeno, in the heart of Alto Adige. These mountain vineyards benefit from a distinctive microclimate, helping to preserve freshness while allowing the Pinot Noir to achieve richness and aromatic precision. Careful vineyard management is followed by gentle vinification and initial maturation in stainless steel. The wine then spends a year in previously used one- and two-year-old oak barrels, followed by further stabilisation in steel and an additional twelve months of ageing in oak, allowing the wood, fruit and structure to integrate harmoniously.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck, game birds, veal, mushroom dishes and richly flavoured risottos, as well as delicately seasoned game. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes is recommended when enjoying the wine in its youth, helping to soften the tannins and reveal its smoky, fruit-driven character.

Producer
Founded in 1907, J.
