Guigal’s Côte Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2022 is a powerful and refined expression of one of the Northern Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. Produced in the heart of Ampuis, it reflects Guigal’s pioneering role in single-vineyard Côte Rôtie and the domaine’s long-standing commitment to low yields, careful élevage and terroir-driven winemaking. Château d’Ampuis is considered one of the estate’s signature wines, alongside the celebrated “La La La” cuvées.

Tasting Notes
Deep red in colour with attractive mauve reflections, the wine opens with generous aromas of ripe black fruit, warming spices and well-integrated oak. On the palate, intense yet polished tannins frame flavours of plum, blackberry and vanilla, supported by a full-bodied, structured profile and a lingering finish.

Despite its richness, the wine has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed after decanting in its youth, but should gain additional complexity and harmony over the next 15–25 years when properly stored.

Production
The fruit comes from Côte Rôtie’s steep, mineral-rich slopes around Ampuis, where limited yields and challenging vineyard conditions contribute to the wine’s depth and concentration. Guigal farms its vineyards with an ecological approach and harvests the grapes for fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures, followed by approximately four weeks of maceration on the skins. The wine then undergoes an exceptionally long maturation of 38 months in new oak, adding spice, vanilla and texture while allowing its powerful fruit and tannins to integrate.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Côte Rôtie is especially well suited to game, roast or grilled red meat, venison and other hearty preparations. Mature hard cheeses and strongly flavoured regional cheeses also make excellent companions. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when serving young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic depth; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all, to preserve their delicacy.

Producer
Founded in Ampuis in 1946 by Étienne Guigal, the domaine grew from his early work in the cellars of Vidal-Fleury, where he began as a 14-year-old in 1924. His son Marcel joined the business in 1961 and continues to lead the estate, while the third generation, Philippe, oversees the winemaking. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers, pioneering the focus on individual Côte Rôtie vineyards and making internationally sought-after wines from La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque. Alongside these famous cuvées, Château d’Ampuis remains one of the estate’s most important wines.

E.
