Defined by mature cherry and blueberry fruit, firm tannins and an exceptionally long finish, it combines traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape character with the depth and complexity of old vines. The Sabon family has been making wine at Domaine de la Janasse since 1967, and the estate has since become one of the leading names in the region.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, intense ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its expressive nose is filled with ripe cherries and blueberries, supported by warming spice and the savoury complexity typical of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On the palate, it is broad and full-bodied, yet remarkably soft and rounded, with generous, very mature fruit, powerful tannins and impressive concentration. The finish is almost endless, leaving layers of dark fruit and spice. With its structure and balance, the 2017 vintage has excellent ageing potential and should develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years, or longer under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The wine comes from Domaine de la Janasse’s highly fragmented vineyard holdings, comprising more than 60 parcels and a mosaic of different Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs. This diversity contributes depth and complexity to the finished cuvée. Made according to the classic method, the wine is matured with 40% in new oak barrels and 60% in large oak foudres, combining textural richness with a sense of freshness and allowing the concentrated fruit and powerful structure to integrate over time.

Food & Serving
A natural match for richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef stew, venison, duck with dark-fruit sauce or slow-cooked Provençal dishes. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and hearty mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C, preferably after decanting for 1–2 hours to open the wine’s aromas and soften its substantial tannins. Older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over the family’s vineyards and chose to establish an independent domaine rather than continue sending the grapes to a cooperative. Named after the family farm in Courthézon, the estate has grown from 15 hectares to approximately 90 hectares. Christophe Sabon joined his father in 1991, followed by his daughter Isabelle ten years later. Thanks to its broad range of vineyard sites and distinctive cuvées—including Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières—Domaine de la Janasse has established itself as one of the great estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
