Originally created for the American market, its success has led to its availability in Europe as well. Unfiltered and notably fresh, it offers an elegant interpretation of southern Rhône Grenache with impressive depth and character.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe red and dark berries, wild herbs, floral notes and subtle spice. On the palate, it is generous and concentrated, yet remarkably lifted for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with flavours of raspberry, black cherry and plum complemented by savoury garrigue, fine spice and well-integrated oak. Silky tannins and a lively freshness provide balance and length.

The 2021 vintage’s freshness makes the wine approachable with decanting, while its concentration and structure give it excellent cellaring potential. It should develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years when stored in a cool, dark cellar.

Production
The fruit comes from the Chaupin vineyard, one of Domaine de la Janasse’s special cuvées and part of the estate’s mosaic of more than 60 individual parcels around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Grenache is harvested with care and undergoes approximately 22 days of maceration and skin fermentation using a traditional vinification approach. The wine is then matured with around 30% in new oak barrels and 70% in large oak foudres, preserving both its richness and its characteristic freshness. It is bottled unfiltered.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef and venison, the wine also complements duck, slow-cooked stews, grilled meats and hearty Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and aubergine. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to rest briefly at serving temperature. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to open up its aromas and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted carefully and for a shorter period to remove any sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over the family vineyards in Courthézon and chose to create an independent estate rather than continue supplying grapes to a cooperative. From its original 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to around 90 hectares, with Aimé’s son Christophe joining in 1991 and his daughter Isabelle becoming part of the team ten years later. Thanks to its diverse collection of more than 60 parcels, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most respected producers, known for both its complex blends and highly regarded single-vineyard cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
