Combining bright freshness, mineral character and finely detailed tannins, it reflects the distinctive identity of one of Sicily’s most celebrated wine regions. The Feudo di Mezzo vineyard is part of Cottanera’s contribution to the revival of quality winemaking on Etna.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a bright ruby-red colour with delicate garnet highlights. Its elegant bouquet opens with notes of dog rose and violet, followed by hints of orange peel, eucalyptus and sweet spices. A distinctive graphite-like minerality provides a striking volcanic undertone.

On the palate, it is structured and vibrant, with pronounced freshness and dense yet polished tannins balanced by an appealing softness. The finish is long, savoury and mineral, with the complexity to develop further in bottle over the coming years. Decanting can help reveal its full aromatic depth in its youth.

Production
The grapes come from around Castiglione di Sicilia, specifically Contrada Diciassettesalme, where approximately 30-year-old vines grow at 750–770 metres above sea level in volcanic lava soils. The vines are spur-pruned and cultivated with limited yields to promote concentration and precision. After a careful manual harvest in October, the grapes are destemmed and fermented under temperature control, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs. A prolonged maceration of around 30 days encourages the gradual extraction of colour and fine polyphenols. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels for 14–16 months, followed by a further 18 months of bottle ageing.

Food & Serving
Its structure and freshness make Feudo di Mezzo an excellent match for rich meat sauces, braised or grilled red meats, game and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16–18°C. Young bottles benefit from decanting for around 30–60 minutes, while mature bottles should be handled more gently to preserve their aromatic detail.

Producer
Founded by the Cambria family, Cottanera has played an important role in the modern revival of viticulture on Mount Etna. The estate farms approximately 65 hectares of vineyards according to rigorous organic and sustainable principles, with the guidance of winemaker Lorenzo Landi. Based in Castiglione di Sicilia, the winery focuses on expressing the character of Etna’s volcanic soils and high-altitude vineyards. Feudo di Mezzo is a particularly compelling example of this approach, combining Nerello Mascalese’s elegance with the power and mineral identity of its terroir.
