Its elegant fruit, beautifully balanced tannins and exceptionally long finish make it an outstanding expression of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. With the capacity to evolve for around 40 years, it is a wine of both immediate appeal and exceptional longevity.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, youthful garnet colour. Its aromatic profile is layered and expressive, offering ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside subtle notes of violet, cedar, graphite and well-integrated spice. On the palate, it is intense and full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit, impressive energy and finely balanced tannins. A persistent, generous finish reveals further mineral and savoury nuances as the wine opens in the glass.

Although already remarkably composed, the 2020 vintage is still youthful and will benefit from extended cellaring. It should develop increasing aromatic complexity and a silkier texture over the next decade, with the potential to mature gracefully for several decades—approximately 40 years under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The vineyards of Pichon Baron lie in Pauillac, close to the Gironde, where deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop concentrated, structured fruit. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and selected parcels of the estate’s other traditional Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are harvested carefully and brought to the winery parcel by parcel, where they undergo skin maceration in tanks. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine remains on the skins for approximately three to four weeks to extract colour, flavour and tannin. Following malolactic fermentation, the selected lots mature in oak barrels, with racking every three to four months to separate the wine from its lees.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for richly flavoured dishes such as roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck breast and beef tenderloin, as well as grilled or roasted mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when enjoying the wine young; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Pichon Baron’s history began in 1689, when the influential Bordeaux merchant Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan acquired vineyards near Château Latour. Through his daughter’s marriage to Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, the estate became part of the renowned Pichon family property. It was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, confirming its place among Bordeaux’s leading wines. After changing hands in the twentieth century, the château was acquired by AXA Millésimes in 1987, which invested in the restoration of its vineyards, winery and cellars. Today, Pichon Baron remains one of Pauillac’s most distinguished producers, combining historic prestige with modern precision.

https://bottlehero.com/products/chateau-pichon-baron-longueville-chateau-pichon-baron-longueville-pauillac-2020
