cascina-ghercina-barolo-2022
Cascina Ghercina, Barolo 2022

Cascina Ghercina Barolo 2022 is a graceful expression of Piedmont’s most celebrated red wine appellation, made from Nebbiolo and shaped by traditional maturation in large Slavonian oak casks. Its combination of ripe red fruit, a subtle liquorice note, supple tannins and harmonious structure makes it approachable in its youth while retaining the classic character of Barolo.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in colour, with the depth and developing garnet tones typical of Nebbiolo. The nose opens with ripe red fruit, complemented by a delicate hint of liquorice. On the palate, it is warm and elegant, with soft tannins, balanced freshness and a harmonious, well-proportioned finish.

Although already inviting, this Barolo should gain added complexity with further bottle age. It can be enjoyed over the next 8–12 years, or longer when carefully stored, as the fruit, tannins and oak continue to integrate.

Production
The wine is produced within the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, where Nebbiolo is known for combining aromatic finesse with structure and ageing potential. After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 28–30°C. The grape skins remain in contact with the must for 12 days, with daily pump-overs to extract colour, aroma and tannin. Maturation follows in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine to develop without overwhelming its delicate red-fruit character.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. It is a natural partner for Piedmontese dishes, braised beef, veal, game, truffle-based recipes, mushroom risotto and mature hard cheeses. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes is recommended when serving it now, particularly with a young vintage such as 2022; older bottles should be handled more carefully and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.
