Once the region’s most widely planted grape, Silvaner has been overtaken by Riesling and Burgundy varieties, and this wine reflects Saalwächter’s commitment to bringing it back into the spotlight.

Tasting Notes
The 2024 vintage opens with delicate floral aromas and fresh Granny Smith apple, joined by hints of white pepper and bay leaf. Its acidity is harmonious and well integrated, while a little air in the glass reveals greater precision, stony mineral notes and a subtle touch of mint.

Production
The grapes come from parcels on the Ingelheimer Berg, where vines of up to 48 years grow in limestone soils. After gentle pressing, the wine fermented and matured in large, half-piece and piece-size oak casks, spending two winters on its full lees. It was bottled unfiltered, with only a minimal addition of sulphur shortly beforehand.

Food & Serving
Its freshness and stony character should suit freshwater fish, roast chicken, or vegetables such as asparagus and fennel. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C. Give it a little time to open in the glass; a brief decant can also help reveal its more nuanced aromas.

Producer
Based in Ingelheim, Carsten Saalwächter is dedicated to restoring Silvaner’s standing in Rheinhessen. Alte Reben has become the estate’s calling card and an accessible introduction to his Silvaner wines, alongside his more highly regarded Grauer Stein and St. Laurentiusberg bottlings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0874/0614/9969/files/carsten-saalwachter-silvaner-alte-reben-2024-0.jpg?v=1791750223
