Combining cool-climate freshness with the depth of low-yielding, approximately 40-year-old vines, it offers an elegant and mineral expression of Ahrweiler’s distinctive sandstone-clay and greywacke soils.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a vibrant ruby-red colour. Its cool-climate nose combines bright and dark berries with expressive cherry notes, subtle earthy nuances and a gently mineral character. On the palate, it is focused and graceful, with concentrated fruit, lively acidity, fine-grained tannins and a long, savoury finish.

The balance between freshness, structure and concentration gives this Spätburgunder excellent medium-term ageing potential. It can be enjoyed now for its energetic fruit and clarity, but should gain additional complexity with several years in bottle.

Production
The grapes come from the Ahrweiler Forstberg vineyard, where sandstone-clay and greywacke soils contribute both finesse and mineral structure. The approximately 40-year-old vines naturally produce modest yields and highly concentrated fruit. Following a hand harvest, around 70% of the grapes were destemmed, while the remainder was fermented as whole clusters. After cold maceration and spontaneous fermentation, the wine matured for 14 months in 600-litre barrels made from local oak. It was bottled without filtration, with only a small addition of sulphur before bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and delicate aromatics. It pairs beautifully with roast poultry, duck, veal, pork, mushroom dishes and earthy vegetable preparations. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 30–60 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine in its youth; older bottles are best poured gently to preserve their finesse.

Producer
Bertram-Baltes is a highly regarded Ahr producer focused on expressive, site-driven Pinot Noir.
