Sourced from a steep, nine-hectare former riverbed of cobblestones, rock and volcanic ash, it captures a particularly lifted, vibrant expression of Napa Cabernet. In the excellent 2018 vintage—widely hailed by the Bond team as one of their most beautiful years—Quella shows an extraordinary mix of purity, precision and energy that has made it one of the true ‘Grand Cru’ benchmarks of the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Bond Quella is a deep garnet-purple, almost opaque at the core with a vivid rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is highly perfumed and detailed, layering violets and crushed petals over red and black plums, Morello cherry and cassis, with undercurrents of warm iron ore, crushed rock and a suggestion of graphite.

On the palate, this is a Cabernet of tension and clarity more than sheer weight. Medium to full-bodied, it glides across the mouth with incredible energy, offering ripe plum and black cherry fruit woven with savory mineral notes, subtle baking spice and a faint, ferrous complexity from the rocky soils. The tannins are very fine-grained and precise, framing the fruit without ever feeling heavy, and the acidity is bright and mouthwatering, giving the wine a sense of lift and drive. The finish is long, pure and polished, lingering with floral and mineral nuances. With its balance of concentration, freshness and structure, this 2018 Quella has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a proper cellar.

Production
Quella comes from a dramatic, nine-hectare hillside vineyard set high in the eastern hills above Napa Valley, on slopes that plunge steeply toward the southwest. The site is essentially an ancient riverbed, composed of cobblestones and fractured rock intertwined with pockets of tuff—compressed volcanic ash that was uplifted during the valley’s last volcanic activity. This poor, well-drained soil naturally limits yields and encourages small, intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon berries. Vineyard work is meticulous and largely done by hand, with careful, selective harvesting carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Bond vinifies each block separately, using a combination of temperature-controlled fermentations and gentle extraction to preserve finesse and site character. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels, allowing the structure to knit together and the subtle floral and mineral notes to emerge, before the final blend is assembled and bottled in very limited quantities.

Food & Serving
2018 Bond Quella is a superb partner for refined dishes built around high-quality proteins: think grilled or roast lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison with a red wine reduction, or slow-braised short rib. Its aromatic lift and mineral edge also work beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, roasted root vegetables or charred leeks. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight its perfume and freshness. Young bottles will benefit from 2–3 hours in a decanter to fully open the nose and soften the tannins; mature bottles should be decanted more gently, mainly to remove sediment, about 30–60 minutes before serving.

Producer
Bond is one of Napa Valley’s most revered estates, created by Harlan Estate founder Bill Harlan as a dedicated project to showcase a small handful of first-growth-caliber hillside sites through 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. After working with more than eighty vineyards over a quarter-century, the team identified just five exceptional crus, each expressing a distinct facet of Napa’s finest terroirs—Quella among them. These limited-production wines are now widely regarded as the Grand Cru equivalents of Napa, prized for their precision, longevity and sense of place. With the backing and expertise of Harlan Estate—themselves often called the “Mouton Rothschild of Napa”—Bond has secured a reputation at the very top of American wine, with strong critical acclaim and a global following, even though the vast majority of the production remains in the US, making bottles particularly rare in Europe.
